Indiana Jones And The Trilogy of Doom 11.10.99

Immediately when you hear John Williams’ rollicking score--Ba Ba Da Ba, Ba Ba Dum, Ba Ba Da Ba, Ba Ba Ba Ba Dum--your head is filled with a thrilling scene from one of the three features that make up the Indiana Jones trilogy.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’ Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom and Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade were responsible for resurrecting the “adventure” part of the action-adventure genre and, in doing it so well, they subsequently buried it again. No one since has been able to even approximate the magic of Indy and his perils.

The following is a refresher course in Dr. Jones trivia. Merely a primer for fans who have forgotten the particulars. You diehards, of course, need no guidebook. Just your trusty leather jacket, fedora and bullwhip.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark

Quote: “I hate snakes, Jock! I hate 'em!”
Sidekick: Sallah (John Rhys-Davies)
Chief Villain: Belloq (Paul Freeman)
Love Interest: Marion Ravenswood (Karen Allen)
The Holy Grail: The Lost Ark Of The Covenant
Nailbiter: A giant rolling boulder looming down on a skedaddling Indy
Inside Joke: Jock's airplane at the beginning has the registration number "OB-
CPO" and the hieroglyphics in the Well of Souls include engravings
of R2-D2 and C-3PO.
Weird Fact: Tom Selleck was originally cast as Indy.

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom

Quote: “Fortune and glory, kid. Fortune and glory.”
Sidekick: Short Round (Ke Huy Quan)
Chief Villain: Mola Ram (Amrish Puri)
Love Interest: Willie Scott (Kate Capeshaw)
The Holy Grail: The Sankara Stones
Nailbiter: The mining car rollercoaster ride
Inside Joke: The nightclub at the beginning is named “Club Obi Wan.”
Weird Fact: The film’s graphic violence inspired the MPAA Rating “PG-13”

Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade

Quote: “That belongs in a museum!”
Sidekick: Professor Henry Jones, Sr. (Sean Connery)
Chief Villain: Vogel (Michael Byrne)
Love Interest: Dr. Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody)
The Holy Grail: The Holy Grail
Nailbiter: The horseback/tank chase scene (“borrowed” from Stagecoach)
Inside Joke: Entering Castle Brunwald, Indy claims to be Lord Robert McFalfa.
"Bob Falfa" was Ford’s character’s name in American Graffiti.
Weird Fact: 9 actors in the film also appeared in James Bond films, including, of
course, Sean Connery
