Movie Review: The Blues Masters 2 ½ Stars

Hooray for Gen-X blues guitarist Colin James for re-discovering and resurrecting a lost Canadian television special that congregated the greatest living blues musicians of the time on one stage for a powerhouse performance and jam session.

Boo to Gen-X blues guitarist Colin James for using cheap camera tricks to insert himself into archival footage so he could play alongside dead blues legends.

Hooray for Gen-X blues guitarist Colin James for presenting a rare glimpse of Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, James Cotton, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Otis Spann and Sunnyland Slim in their prime.

Boo to Gen-X blues guitarist Colin James for wrapping-around the rare glimpse of Muddy Waters, et al with whanky segments in which Colin displays his chops with blues riffs lifted from the Stevie Ray Vaughn fake book.

Hooray for Gen-X blues guitarist Colin James for calling Otis Spann “Chicago’s greatest blues piano player.”

Boo to Gen-X blues guitarist Colin James for nearly ruining an otherwise outstanding performance film.
